Compress or decompress GZIP

The humble .gz — pack a file or text into gzip format, or open one back up for reading.

How it works

  1. Drop a .gz file or paste text

Log files, exports, API responses saved via curl — all common in the wild.

  2. Pick the direction

Decompress .gz to see its contents, or compress text/files into a .gz.

  3. Download or copy

The decompressed content lands as a file, ready for a text editor.

Questions people actually ask

Is .gz the same as .zip?

No — gzip compresses one stream, no file names, no archive. .zip bundles several files. The tools here each do what their format does.

A .tgz file — can this open it?

Not here; .tgz is gzip wrapped around a tar archive, and needs archive handling first. If it matters, say so via the contact page.
