Generate a hash (SHA-1/256/384/512)

Checksums for text or files — every SHA seen in the wild — to verify a download or fingerprint a string.

How it works

  1. Text or file?

Paste a string, or drop a file to hash its full contents.

  2. Pick the algorithms

All four SHA variants are produced at once. SHA-256 is the one you want 99% of the time.

  3. Compare or copy

Paste the 'official' hash next to it and compare visually — or hex by hex.

Questions people actually ask

Why no MD5?

Browsers no longer expose it for good reason — it's broken for security use. If you need MD5 to match an old checksum, say so via the contact page.

Is a hash the same as encryption?

No — hashing is one-way by design. You can't get the file back from its hash; you can only check that another copy matches.
