Low contrast colours — bad idea?

Dark-on-light with real contrast scans reliably; light-on-dark and low-contrast pairs fail on many phone cameras. The tool warns if you drift into risky territory.

How much text fits?

Comfortably: a few hundred characters. At that point the code gets dense and needs to be printed bigger to scan from a distance.
