Are the conversions done online?
No — your browser has a full image engine built in, and that's what's used. The files never touch a server because there isn't one.
Why did my PNG turn white around the edges?
JPG has no transparency. If a transparent PNG goes to JPG, the background has to become something — white is the default. Output to PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
